TOBY JUGS vs CHARACTER MUGS :: by TOBY'S N MORE
TOBY JUG or CHARACTER MUG, which are you?
This lens was built to hear your opinion on what you would rather have in your home. Would you rather have a Toby Jug or instead would you like to have a Character mug? What the heck is the difference?
The difference being that a true Toby Jug is a full-length figure dressed from head to toe in the clothing associated with the 18th Century :- long frock-coat, tricorn hat, knee-length breeches, waistcoat & neckerchief; Usually these characters are clutching a drinking vessel or sometimes a pipe or snuff box. The first Toby Jug was made in the early 18th century. It was a jovial, seated, male figure, with a mug in his hand and a tricorn hat which made a pouring spout.
A Character Mug on the other hand is only the head, or head and shoulders, of a figure & often having an elaborate handle. Character Mugs were first introduced by Royal Doulton in the 1930s. In old English, the term MUG is slang for a face so the name Character Mug describes the faces produced by Royal Doulton. During the last seventy years, this famous British company has produced hundreds of fictional and real life personalities from Marilyn Munroe to Elvis Presley and Glenn Miller to name a few famous Mugs.
